Beth Miller Selected to be Loeb Fellow at Harvard University; Jenn Richards Appointed as Interim Executive Director

By Linda Dottor
Beth Miller, executive director of the Community Design Collaborative

Beth Miller, executive director of the Community Design Collaborative, has been awarded the prestigious Loeb Fellowship at the Harvard Graduate School of Design. Loeb fellows are civic leaders, architects, public space activists, policymakers and transit advocates who reflect and connect on how their work can advance positive social outcomes.

The Loeb Fellowship draws applicants from across the US and the world. This year’s cohort has nine fellows who were selected from an international pool of over 100 candidates. Loeb Fellows for the 2019-2020 academic year include the Deputy Mayor for Urban Nature, Resilience and Climate Change Adaptation for the city of Athens, Greece; the Head of Transportation Policy and Research at Uber; and the Acting Associate Director for Curatorial Affairs at the National Museum of African American History and Culture, among others. Upon completion of her fellowship, Miller will join more than 450 Loeb alumni including Inga Saffron, Blaine Bonham, Anne Marie Lubenau, Damon Rich and Maurice Cox.

“During the Fellowship, I am eager to explore how the field of public interest design is evolving and learn about systems change from other fields. My goal is to strengthen ways for design to support equitable growth and development,” says Miller. “The Loeb Fellowship will allow me to grow and gain a vast new network to champion the Collaborative’s work in Philadelphia.”

The Collaborative is also pleased to announce the appointment of Jenn Richards of High Gear Consulting Group as interim executive director, effective September 3, 2019. The Board of Directors engaged in a thorough search process to find an interim executive director to manage the organization during Miller’s leave of absence. Richards brings to the Collaborative skills in management, communications and fundraising , all honed during her many years of experience working in high impact positions for nonprofits in the region, including most recently with the Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania.

Board Co-Chair Richard Winston, AIA, says, “This is quite an honor for both Beth and the Collaborative. The competition for a Loeb Fellowship is very stiff and the number of recipients very few. It speaks to Beth’s many accomplishments and, as well, to the Collaborative’s reputation and what we all have achieved together.” Winston added, “The Board and staff of the Collaborative also look forward to working with Jenn Richards in her role as Interim Executive Director.”
