The Alexander Celebrates Grand Opening - New luxury apartment building bridges Center City and North Philadelphia

By The Harman Group

Philadelphia, PA - The Harman Group (THG), a firm specializing in structural engineering and parking planning and design, is pleased to announce the grand opening of The Alexander, a luxury residential building located at 1601 Vine Street, adjacent to the Mormon Temple. The 483,000-square-foot building features 264 rental apartments, ground floor retail and three levels of underground parking totaling 140,000 square feet.

The Harman Group provided structural engineering and parking consulting services for this project, which was designed by Robert A.M. Stern Architects and BLT Architects.

Named after the Philadelphia sculptor who created the William Penn statue on top of City Hall, Alexander Calder, the Alexander offers sweeping views of the Center City skyline from its many terraces. Luxury amenities include an indoor swimming pool, six green roofs, an observation deck and amenities terrace, and fitness and business centers. Many of the units feature outdoor balconies or wrap-around terraces.

The Harman Group worked closely with the design team to create structural plans that complemented the team’s vision of the project, which needed to accommodate multiple uses. The residential portion is a 31-story cast-in-place concrete tower over a three-story podium and three levels of post-tensioned underground parking. The podium includes 13 three-story townhouses and ground floor retail space, which is now occupied by The Learning Experience, an early education academy for children six weeks to six years old.

“The Harman Group specializes in creative engineering for challenging building conditions,” said Todd Campbell, senior associate and project manager at The Harman Group. “In this case, we were able to design innovative systems for the heavy pre-cast building while accommodating different uses and different levels of the building.”

Construction was completed in May 2018 by a joint venture between LF Driscoll Company and BIG-D Construction.
