116th John Stewardson Competition in Architecture Winners Announced

Stewardson winner Melanie Whedon ’14; James Doerfler, PhilaU’s director of the architecture and architectural studies programs; and Stewardson finalist fifth-year architecture student Brian Wise celebrate the awards.

The results of the 116th John Stewardson Competition in Architecture 2017 have officially been announced.
 
The Stewardson is an annual competition of the seven accredited architecture programs in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, the Fellowship provides for a $10,000 dollar traveling scholarship to be undertaken for up to a year following the jury. This year's jury was held on the afternoon of Friday March 3rd at the PSFS Building in downtown Philadelphia.
 
This year's winning submission and the 2017 Stewardson Fellow is Melanie Whedon of Philadelphia University. The runner up is Basak Gulsen Huner, of the University of Pennsylvania.
 
This year's design jury was made up of Petra Stanev, AIA, Ken Jacobs, PhD. AIA, and John MacCallum, AIA. Also participating noted astronomer, astronomical observer and photographer, educator, and founder of the UA SkyCenter was Adam Block of the University of Arizona's  Seward Observatory.
